bell canada and queen's university signed the memorandum Planning and managing the next generation A.I. supercomputing Facility located in Canada. The partnership signals a broader shift toward sovereign AI infrastructure as governments, universities and industry seek to secure domestic computing capacity and reduce dependence on foreign-controlled systems.

Focus on sovereign computing and domestic AI capabilities

The proposed facility is positioned as a Canadian-owned and managed supercomputing platform aimed at supporting academic research while enabling businesses and government agencies to develop and deploy AI applications at scale. Bell and Queen's said the project aims to strengthen Canada's digital sovereignty by bringing sensitive data and intellectual property under state surveillance.

Mr. Bell will lead the design, construction, financing and long-term maintenance of the facility, which will operate on the company's high-speed fiber network. Queen's will leverage the expertise of its Advanced Computing Center to oversee the development of the supercomputer itself, including system architecture, chip procurement, advanced technology programs, and operations.

The announcement was shared on LinkedIn by Mirko Bibic, President and CEO of Bell, who wrote, “Bell University and Queen's University are working together to plan and build Canada's next generation sovereign AI supercomputing facility. This partnership will accelerate Canada's AI ecosystem, accelerate the adoption of AI tools in the country, and strengthen our digital sovereignty.”

Research leadership and systems design

Queen's University researchers will lead research into system architecture and advanced computing programs, with sustainability aspects such as the use of heat recovery part of the facility design. The university has contributed to the development and operation of large-scale supercomputing systems and AI research infrastructure.
