We are analyzing CCTV videos of two explosions in Tehran on June 15th during the 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel.

The dramatic footage released yesterday by Iranian media was quickly shared online. Soon afterwards, many questions were raised about its credibility.

I'm working with my BBC Persian colleagues to analyze video frames frame by frame. Our conclusion is that the video is authentic and here is why we can say it.

First, the version that initially went viral was low quality and rough. This explains why some inconsistencies were displayed on the video. For example, certain sections looked blurry and ghostly.

However, a high-resolution version of the same footage was posted online later that day, making it look more authentic.

They also found multiple videos posted by Iranian social media users on June 15th. It shows the aftermath of both attacks. We geolocated the first explosion in a building on Bajonar Street in Tehran's Tajlish district, and at a crossroads of about 100m to the west of the second.

Aftermath video, filmed by Iranians, showed significant damage to buildings and streets with severe flooding at junctions at the intersection due to damage to water pipes beneath the road. Iranian media also released images of repair work taking place at the intersection of the second strike.

The video we saw was someone filming CCTV footage on another device. Starting in December 2022, I found a photo showing a surveillance camera in a position that gives the same view.

We also spoke with GetReal Security experts to analyze the signs of AI manipulation. Professor Hany Farid said the lower resolution version raised the question, while the clearer version made it easier to confirm that the video is most likely legitimate.

The day after the attack, the IDF said it carried out several strikes at the “command centres belonging to the IRGC and the Iranian army's QUDS forces” and shared graphics of the attack location., External Includes neighborhood tagelish.

We continue to work to confirm that many civilians have been killed on strike and to confirm their identity.
