BBC Verify senior journalist reports from Delhi
I have reviewed multiple videos and images that claim to show Monday’s explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort, which killed at least eight people and injured dozens more.
I have seen both AI-generated images and older images circulating falsely claiming to be of explosions.
One of them, an Instagram reel that claims to show the moment of the explosion, is going viral.
The date of the incident is written on the video along with the words, “Terrorist explosion in car parked outside Delhi’s Red Fort, killing 8 people” in Hindi.
In the first eight seconds of the video, people nearby can be seen walking toward the fireball as it occurs. The rest of the video shows the car on fire.
We ran the video through Synth ID, Google’s AI detection tool. The results suggested that both the video and audio were generated by AI, confirming that they were artificially created.
If you look closely, there’s also a watermark in the bottom right corner of the video that says Veo, Google’s own AI generation tool.
This video may be misleading as it was taken from real footage of the explosion that we saw at the time and was remade using Veo to add explosions, flames, people, and sound.
Indian fact-checking websites also report that the video is not authentic.
Delhi Police has urged users not to spread unverified material or claims as the investigation is still ongoing.
