Mianz College launched Maldives' first bachelor's degree program, specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, marking an important milestone in the country's technical education environment. The new program aims to equip Mardivians with the skills necessary to build and manage AI technology as AI usage continues to expand rapidly worldwide.
The 3-Year Bachelor of Science Degree (BSC) program blends the core computer science fundamentals with specialized AI subjects, including the final year Capstone Project. To improve accessibility, the course will be delivered through a combination of face-to-face and online learning, allowing students across the atoll to participate without moving to Malé.
The launch comes amid a global surge in AI adoption. According to the 2024 McKinsey Global Survey, 78% of organizations report using some form of AI from 65% in the same year. The technology is increasingly integrated into key areas such as marketing, software development, service operations and product design, transforming the way industries operate around the world.
As AI rapidly changes industries around the world, concerns are growing about the impact on employment, productivity and economic inequality. A recent analysis by the OECD estimates that around 25% of workers are currently “exposed” to the generator AI, defining that at least 20% of tasks may have been completed 50% faster using these tools. However, the broader employment effect is uneven, with some sectors and regions becoming more vulnerable to disruption than others.
While advances in AI seem inevitable, experts agree to create new roles along with the roles that shifts are displaced, especially in AI development, maintenance and monitoring. Against this backdrop, the development of human capital in the AI sector has become a national order for many countries, including the Maldives.
In response, Mianz College introduced a 360 credit bachelor of science degree in artificial intelligence and machine learning. Spanning six semesters, the program offers a comprehensive curriculum that begins with programming (Python and C++), data structures, discrete mathematics, calculations, and statistics. Go to advanced topics such as machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing, big data analysis, and advanced algorithms.
Students will also complete the 30 Credit Capstone Project, along with modules on research methods and workplace preparation, to ensure they are prepared for a real-world role in the evolving digital economy. The program is offered through a hybrid model of classroom instruction and e-learning, allowing students access beyond the capital, Male City.
By building a pipeline of skilled AI professionals, the programme is expected to boost the technology sector in the Maldives, allowing alumni to implement AI-driven solutions to various industries and reduce their reliance on foreign expertise.
