Philippines raises issue with Chinese ambassador

The Philippine government first expressed its concerns on July 16, when Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Leo Herrera Lim met with Chinese Ambassador Jingquan.

During the meeting, Lim strongly objected to the video and related editorial cartoons and called for their immediate deletion.

“Such content is contrary to the mutual respect expected between countries and does not contribute to the sound and stable operation of bilateral relations,” the DFA said in a statement.

Background of maritime conflicts

The dispute centers on a landmark 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration that found China’s nine-dash line claim in the South China Sea had no legal basis under international law.

The court ruled in favor of the Philippines, confirming its sovereign rights within its exclusive economic zone, where it has exclusive rights to explore and use marine resources.

China rejects the ruling and continues to lay claim to much of the strategic waterway.
