Artificial Intelligence in Chinese Herbal Medicine – Mother Earth News

AI News

Artificial intelligence in herbal medicine can become unpredictable if given the wrong advice. Learn how to vet sources and evaluate the quality of advice.

We see a lot of herbal information on social media and online, some of which is generated by AI. How do I know if I can trust it?

Artificial intelligence in Chinese medicine

Low-barrier herbal writing powered by AI is entering the market en masse with books, blogs, videos, social media accounts, and more. Some things may seem sophisticated and useful, but that doesn’t mean they come from lived experience. In 2025, a report was released showing that approximately 82% of Chinese herbal medicine books on Amazon were likely generated by AI, including books in the “Herbal Medicine” category.

Ask the AI questions directly and get answers almost instantly. But speed isn’t always the key when it comes to getting advice about your health and wellbeing.

I’ve seen AI herbal suggestions filled with misinformation, or omit important details even when they seem convincing at first glance. AI-generated content may say that an herb is “good for digestion,” but it doesn’t explain how it interacts with the body, how much to take, how to prepare it, how it relates to your specific constitution, or when it shouldn’t be used. Such general advice can be dangerous, especially if the user is already working with something complex.

So when making health choices, stay calm and make sure the information comes from reliable and experienced sources.

How to evaluate herbal information

If you’re reading something and trying to decide whether it’s accurate knowledge about herbs, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Identify who the author is. Look for an herbalist who has been practicing for a long time. Please check it out. You should be able to find a real person beyond a single article or account. If you research AI pen names, you won’t find any history.

Notice how much of what you see is already shaped by AI. AI-generated personas are operating at scale on social platforms. Many of the new herbal educators coming online are aided by AI. So, rather than learning from someone with decades of concrete experience, new educators can gain “instant” information without much actual knowledge or background. These are called AI Amplified Herbal Authority Accounts and the information shared is not complete.

Don’t rely on tone as evidence of expertise. Where authority used to be built through time, practice, and relationships, it is now built through language patterns, structured content, and sophisticated artifacts. Confidence, storytelling, and “looking like you know” are all created instantly. These used to be signals of experience, but they are no longer reliable.

Note the idiosyncrasies. The details of how the herb is used are important. It’s not just what you receive. It’s all about its quantity, how it’s made, and even the timing of its use. As an experienced herbalist, I also think about contraindications for drugs and conditions. If someone has a chronic illness or autoimmune disease, I don’t want to rely on popular (or generated) advice for that person’s health.

Investigate the experience behind the information. Treating herbs in a holistic framework requires observing and understanding each unique situation. Pay attention to how someone responds and make adjustments along the way. AI cannot access it. Especially in areas where safety is critical, the quality of what you’re learning changes when the experience is simulated rather than live.

Rely on true herbal wisdom

Herbalism was built on the relationship between plants and humans. Over time you will get to know the herbs better. Notice how they grow, when you can harvest them, how they smell and taste, and how they feel in your body. This knowledge has been inherited from our ancestors and shaped by everyday use. Learn it by making herbal-infused foods and herbal remedies and adjusting them as needed.

AI is not a substitute for working with an experienced herbalist. AI can’t look you in the eye, talk to you, or see what you’re going through. That can only be obtained by communicating with genuine people who have dedicated their time to learning herbal wisdom.
