The Institute for AI Policy and Strategy (IAPS) has officially opened applications for the 2026 AI Policy Fellowship, a three-month initiative aimed at shaping the future of global AI governance. This fully-funded program is designed for professionals from diverse backgrounds who want to strengthen their practical policy skills to secure a positive future in a world with powerful AI.
This fellowship is scheduled to run from June 1 to August 21, 2026 and offers a hybrid structure. While participants can choose to work fully in-person or remotely in Washington, D.C., all fellows are required to participate in intensive in-person training in the nation’s capital from June 1 to June 12.
After training, participants will spend 10 weeks working alongside AI policy experts who will guide them on projects aimed at influencing national and global policy.
Fellows engage in practical, high-impact work such as developing policy briefs, presenting to government officials, and publishing editorials.
Funds and benefits
The fellowship provides significant financial support so that participants can focus fully on their work. Senior Fellows receive a $22,000 stipend and other Fellows receive $15,000 for full-time participation during a three-month term.
In addition to the stipend, the program provides weekly one-on-one coaching focused on career development, project management, and productivity.
Fellows also receive ongoing feedback from IAPS researchers and have full access to the Institute’s extensive professional network.
Application requirements
IAPS seeks a diverse range of applicants with both policy and technology backgrounds, including those currently working in industry, government, and think tanks. The program includes a variety of seniority levels and welcomes candidates from undergraduates to professionals with decades of experience.
The main requirement for success is a solid understanding of the subject matter or alignment with IAPS’ specific AI policy priorities. Successful candidates will be able to work independently on complex tasks, such as writing reports or organizing ambitious international conferences.
