Apple is reportedly bolstering its artificial intelligence efforts in key ways with new internal initiatives focused on building AI tools like ChatGPT, designed to reshape the way users search and interact with devices. This development occurs when Tech Giant is preparing for the highly anticipated launch of the iPhone 17 Pro.
According to Mark Garman of Bloomberg, Apple quietly framed a new AI division called “Answer, Knowledge, Information.” The group is led by SIRI team veteran Robby Walker and reports directly to Apple's AI head John Giannandrea. Their mission is to create streamlined chatbot experiences that allow users to quickly and naturally access huge amounts of knowledge. It is essentially a rival to ChatGpt, but is built entirely in-house.
This shows a significant change in Apple's AI strategy. The company previously integrated Openai's ChatGpt with Siri through its strategic partnership, but the formation of AKI shows that Apple prioritizes native solutions over third-party collaborations.
Interestingly, this pivot comes despite past statements from top Apple executives who have expressed skepticism about the need for chatbot-based AI. However, with increasing competition and rapid advances in this area, it appears that Apple is rethinking its stance. The new direction comes in response to criticism that Apple Intelligence Suite, which includes features such as Genmoji, notification summaries, and writing assistance, is not meeting user expectations. The delay in deploying a comprehensive Siri upgrade is only added to the frustration of the user.
The central focus of the AKI team is to provide the next generation of search experiences. It mimics the conversational and contextual capabilities found in tools such as ChatGPT and Perplexity AI. Apple previously explored partnerships with a variety of AI-driven search companies, but now it appears they have chosen to go their own way.
In another important development, Apple is testing the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro under real-world conditions. The report suggests that the device was seen in San Francisco, cleverly disguised with a protective case to hide the final design. This indicates that hardware development is on the schedule as Apple prepares for its major product cycle.
However, the path to AI leadership has not been completely smooth for Apple. In recent weeks, the company has seen the departures of several AI researchers, and Meta reportedly poaching four experts in just a month. These exits raise questions, particularly regarding Apple's Foundation model team, morale and internal dynamics. This is the unit responsible for training its generative AI and large-scale language models.
Despite these set-offs, Apple's updated AI push could fill important gaps in the existing ecosystem and provide a more intelligent and intuitive experience for users.
