On Monday, Apple announced plans to spend $500 billion to bolster its artificial intelligence ambitions that add 20,000 research and development jobs in the US over the next four years.
The plan includes expanding data center facilities in Michigan, Texas, California, Arizona, Nevada, Iowa, Oregon, North Carolina and Washington. With the help of FoxConn in Taiwan, the company will build a 250,000-square-foot facility in Houston, Texas and manufacture AI servers that support API ENTERITEALS.
US President Donald Trump has tried to argue that the announcement is boosting his administration. Recently, there has been a decline in approval ratings after a whirlwind began in his second term, including thousands of federal firing. Trump met with Apple CEO Tim Cook last week to promote Monday's announcement in a social media post as a vote of confidence in his administration.
At an event with the governor of Washington, D.C. last week, Trump said Apple's investments were evidence that his tariff efforts were rewarded. Apple manufactures many products in China and faces new 10% tariffs on those products. “[Apple] We stopped two plants that are beginning to build in Mexico,” Trump said. The tariffs are great. ”
Despite Trump's claims, Apple did not say if the proposed tariffs were factored into its plan. Also, it is unclear what “plants” Trump refers to, as Apple has not announced a specific plan to build in Mexico. According to reports, Foxconn, which produces iPhones for Apple in China and India, plans to work with Nvidia to build a factory in Mexico.
In 2021, during the Biden administration, Apple made a $43 billion commitment to creating 20,000 new jobs nationwide over five years. However, plans to build a new campus at Research Triangle Park in North Carolina were suspended in 2024. During the first Trump administration, Apple announced a $350 billion five-year spending plan. Apple has not publicly revealed how much of these previous commitments have been fulfilled.
Cook said Apple is working to boost domestic manufacturing.
“We are bullish on the future of American innovation and we are proud to build on years of US investment with this $500 billion commitment to our country's future,” Cook said in a statement. He said the company will double the advanced manufacturing fund that it invests in advanced manufacturing training.
Apple said 20,000 jobs will be added to the 2.9 million jobs already supporting nationwide, through direct employment, collaboration with US-based suppliers and manufacturers, and hiring developers. The new position will focus on advances in research and development, software development, silicon engineering, AI and machine learning.
“This is a welcome sign when Apple steps up to design manufacturing infrastructure for an intelligent era,” Venkat Venkatraman, honorary president of the Boston University School of Business, wrote in a LinkedIn post. “Could this help Apple get into a wider set of digital products? Perhaps. It also shows a major geographical reorganization of its global footprint (and political reality)!”

The announced Texas manufacturing facility is scheduled to open in 2026 and will produce AI servers previously manufactured outside the US.
Founded in 2017 to promote innovation in advanced manufacturing training and support, the company's US Advanced Manufacturing Fund will increase from $5 billion to $10 billion. The expanded efforts include a multi-billion dollar commitment from Apple to produce sophisticated silicon at TSMC's Arizona plant.
In Detroit, the company launches Apple Manufacturing Academy, offering free, in-person and online courses to teach project management and manufacturing process optimization, as well as other smart manufacturing technologies.
