In early discussions with Google, Apple reportedly could enhance key improvements to the Siri Voice Assistant in order to license the Gemini Artificial Intelligence (AI) model. This movement, which is considered a major change for iPhone manufacturers, has been working to keep up in the evolving field of generator AI. Citing a source familiar with private discussions, Bloomberg reported that Apple recently approached Google to investigate the possibility of using a customized version of the Gemini AI model. The goal is to create a more capable foundation for new Siri. This could debut as early as next year, the report said, adding that Google has already begun training models designed to run on Apple's servers.Apple is developing its own AI model, but is also considering external partnerships to accelerate progress. The company has previously spoken with other major AI companies, including human PBC and Openai, to assess whether their models, Claude or ChatGpt, serve as Siri's more powerful “brain.”
Apple is still finalizing Gemini AI deals with Google
The report said talks are still in preliminary stages and Apple has not yet made a final decision. The company is reportedly a few weeks away from deciding whether to continue developing AI internally or partnering with external providers. Even if you choose to partnership, there is no final choice of which company to work with, Bloomberg reported. The planned SIRI update was originally built using technology from Apple's Foundation Models team. This same group is responsible for large language models for devices that perform Apple Intelligence functions, such as text summaries and creating custom emojis.Last year, Apple partnered with Openai to use ChatGpt as an option for Siri when dealing with general knowledge questions, a task that Assistant has historically struggled with. Apple and Google have publicly suggested plans for a similar integration of Google's Gemini.Apple and Google already have commercial ties despite being a fierce competitor in the smartphone, operating system and services market. This includes a search partnership where Google pays billions of dollars each year to make Apple's billions of dollars the default search engine for Apple devices. Meanwhile, Google already has a similar partnership with Samsung, with its AI technology enhancing many of the AI features on Galaxy smartphones.
