Appian launches AI agent to increase efficiency and modernize apps

Appian has released new artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities designed to embed agents directly within business processes and modernize legacy applications.

The company says the enhancements have delivered tangible results, making tools available to help business users and IT teams automate complex workflows and develop new AI-assisted enterprise applications.

Built-in AI agent

The newly released Agent Studio enables organizations to deploy AI agents at scale within enterprise operations. These agents can handle unexpected situations, interpret unstructured data and act on information held across enterprise systems, company representatives said.

According to Appian, agents leverage a centralized data fabric and apply process context to ensure that agent work can be monitored and support auditing requirements.

Beta users were able to test Agent Studio prior to its general availability. As a result of this initial use, participants used over 200 AI agents and performed over 6,000 runs. All participants reportedly described the product as “intuitive.”

Cox continued, “Agent Studio bridges the gap between business users and software engineers. By uploading existing processes into the agent’s knowledge set, we quickly achieved reliable clinician-patient matching. This is powerful results from a simple setup.”

Application modernization

Now widely available, the Appian Composer tool helps organizations accelerate application modernization by supporting users from a variety of technical backgrounds.

Composer guides users in developing data structures, processes, and user experiences, resulting in fully functional applications that can be customized to meet specific business needs. Appian reports that more than 130 organizations created more than 1,300 applications using Composer during the beta period.

Scalable data fabric

Appian has also upgraded its data management layer.

The company’s data fabric now supports up to 50 million rows and is five times faster than before. Transparent data encryption is implemented to support enhanced information security compliance.

Challenges of introducing AI

Highlighting the MIT study, Appian points out that 95% of generative AI business integrations fail to achieve significant benefits. The company claims that integrating AI into processes, rather than deploying separate chatbots and tools, will result in better outcomes and scalability.

“Many organizations were deploying inefficient and expensive standalone AI chatbots to their back-office operations teams,” said Michael Beckley, CTO at Appian.

“MIT research shows that this approach fails 95% of the time because AI itself is easily confused by different data contexts. Appian takes a fundamentally different path. We embed specialized AI agents directly within operational workflows, delivering reliable results at scale and enabling real-world outcomes, such as accurately processing tens of millions of insurance quotes per year for a single customer.”
