In a surprising turn of events, OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has announced that it will be shutting down its video generation service, Sora, just six months after its launch in September 2025. Despite a record-breaking debut fueled by extensive press from YouTube creators and filmmakers, OpenAI is (presumably) steering resources toward next-generation models.

When Sora was introduced, the reaction within the creator community was a healthy mix of extreme enthusiasm and deep-seated fear. Sora allows users to generate high-resolution videos that include “cameos” of themselves, and reached 1 million downloads faster than ChatGPT. This is very impressive.
However, the hype appears to have quickly cooled as the platform drew criticism over unauthorized deepfakes of celebrities. In response, OpenAI introduced strict safety measures that require celebrity consent before people can use their faces in AI-generated videos. This restriction reportedly eroded the app’s viral appeal and led to a decline in active users.
It is noteworthy that this is the first major outage for OpenAI and shows that even the strongest players in the industry can fail when dealing with market demands and regulations.
One thing is for sure: While many filmmakers will celebrate Sora’s closure, others will move on to other platforms. This is unlikely to be OpenAI’s final word on AI video creation, as competitors such as Google Veo 3.1, Runway Gen-4, and Kling AI (yet) are available.
