WASHINGTON: To furiously hit 1,000 targets in the first 24 hours of the Iranian attack, the US military leveraged the most advanced artificial intelligence ever used in war. The tool could be difficult for the Pentagon to part with, even if it cuts ties with the company that created it, The Washington Post reported. The military’s Maven Smart system, built by data mining company Palantir, generates insights from an astonishing amount of sensitive data from satellites, surveillance and other intelligence sources to help provide real-time targeting and target prioritization for military operations in Iran, according to three people familiar with the system.
The system incorporates Anthropic’s AI tool Claude. The technology was banned by the Pentagon last week after intense negotiations over the terms of its use in war. Over the past year, military planners have watched Claude grow into a tool used routinely by most branches of the military in conjunction with Maybin, two of the people said.
The military plans to continue using the technology while waiting for a replacement to be phased in, two of the people said. The use of advanced generative AI in Iran operations reaches a moment of heated debate over the ethics and speed of using such tools in war.
