This course series is co-taught by Anthropic instructors Professors Rick Dakan and Joseph Feller, who developed the research-backed AI Fluency Framework, and Giving Tuesday.
The foundational course “Anthropic AI Fluency: Framework and Foundations” is listed as beginner level and takes approximately 3 hours. Covering AI literacy, human-AI collaboration, and generative AI, learners apply the 4D framework to practical projects.
Coursera CEO Greg Hart also posted about the launch on LinkedIn, saying that Anthropic has launched “5 free AI fluency courses on Coursera to help learners around the world build practical AI skills.”
Coursera now has 5 free AI courses
The five courses cover general AI fluency and applied uses in education, student learning, and nonprofit work.
AI Fluency: Framework and Foundations introduces the 4D framework and focuses on ethical and effective collaboration with AI. Coursera recommends starting with this course before moving on to a specialized course.
AI Fluency for Educators covers pedagogy-based course design, materials, and authentic assessment. Teaching AI Fluency is focused on helping educators incorporate AI into curriculum design and assessment, including managing AI-enhanced student work.
“AI Fluency for Students” describes the use of AI as a thought partner for learning and career growth while maintaining critical thinking and creativity.
AI Fluency for Nonprofits covers the use of AI across fundraising, advocacy, communications, and operations.
Anthropic extends beyond Claude’s training
According to Coursera, this release nearly doubles Anthropic’s course catalog on Coursera and moves the catalog beyond Claude’s direct training to broader AI fluency.
Baker Stein said Anthropic remains focused on helping people navigate change around AI tools.
“As demand for Anthropic’s AI tools continues to grow, the company remains committed to guiding the world through this major technological change. Accessible AI education is central to that mission, and we’re proud to make these courses available for free on Coursera as Community Impact Courses, expanding access to learning about urgent social needs.”
Mr. Hart also linked the course to workforce readiness, particularly preparing graduates for the workforce.
“AI fluency is essential for today’s workforce, especially for new graduates entering the job market,” Hart wrote. “We are proud to offer these courses for free on Coursera so more learners can develop the skills they need for future jobs.”
Courses for educators, students, and nonprofit organizations
Courses focused on education will be most relevant to schools, colleges, universities, and teacher development teams considering how to teach and assess AI.
The Educator course covers how AI can support course design, materials, and assessment. Teaching AI Fluency courses focus on preparing students for an AI-first workforce through curriculum integration and real-world application.
Mr Hart said the foundation course was a “great starting point” for learners to gain confidence in using AI in the real world.
“Learners will build confidence to apply AI thoughtfully, responsibly, and effectively in real-world settings while strengthening their creativity, judgment, and decision-making skills,” he wrote.
The course is now available on Coursera. Coursera says learners should start with AI Fluency: Framework and Foundations before moving on to the Educator, Student, Education, or Nonprofit courses.
