OpenAI competitor Anthropic on Thursday unveiled Claude 3.5 Sonnet, its most powerful artificial intelligence model to date.

Claude is one of several chatbots that have exploded in popularity over the past year, like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. Founded by former OpenAI research executives, Anthropic counts backers like Google, Salesforce and Amazon. Over the past year, the company has closed five funding deals totaling about $7.3 billion.

The news follows Anthropic's announcement of its Claude 3 family of models in March and OpenAI's GPT-4o in May. The company says Claude 3.5 Sonnet is faster than its previous flagship model, Claude 3 Opus, and is the first model in Anthropic's new Claude 3.5 family.

Claude 3.5 Sonnet is available for free from the company's website, Claude.ai, and the Claude iPhone app. Claude Pro and Team subscribers have access to the latest model with higher rate limits.

“It has a significantly improved ability to understand nuance, humor, and complex instructions, and is adept at writing high-quality content in a natural, relatable tone,” the company said in a blog post. It can also write, edit, and run code.

Anthropik also unveiled “Artifact.” The company said users can ask the Claude chatbot to do things like generate text documents or code, and then open the results in a dedicated window. “This creates a dynamic workspace where you can review, edit, and build on Claude deliverables in real time,” the company said, adding that it hopes Artifact will be useful for code development, drafting and analyzing legal agreements, writing business reports, and more.

As startups like Anthropic and OpenAI gain traction in the generative AI business, they have joined tech giants like Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta in an AI arms race to integrate the technology to keep up in a market predicted to exceed $1 trillion in revenue within the decade.

News of Anthropic's new models comes after the company first unveiled its enterprise-focused products in May.

The enterprise plan, called Teams, has been in development over the past few quarters and has been beta tested with 30 to 50 customers in industries including technology, financial services, legal services and healthcare, Anthropik co-founder Daniella Amodei told CNBC in an interview last month. The idea for the service came about after many of those same customers also wanted an enterprise-specific product, Amodei added.

“We're hearing from companies that they're already using Claude in their offices,” Amodei said at the time.

Shortly after Anthropik's new product launch last month, Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger joined the company as chief product officer. Krieger, the former chief technology officer at Meta-owned Instagram, helped grow the platform to 1 billion users and expanded the engineering team to more than 450 people during his tenure, according to the company. Jan Reijke, former safety lead at OpenAI, also joined the company in May.
