Ring, Amazon's Smart Security brand, has launched its first AI (AI) feature aimed at improving home security and user convenience. A new feature called video description uses generated AI to provide motion-based text notifications, allowing users to quickly understand the nature of activity detected by ring video doorbells and security cameras.
The feature, announced Wednesday, marks the ring's entry into an AI-driven home security solution. The company emphasized that the video description works seamlessly with all existing ring doorbells and cameras, eliminating the need for users to purchase new hardware and access features.
In a detailed newsroom post, Ring founder Jamie Siminoff described the AI-powered addition as designed to make home security smarter and more user-friendly. Instead of viewing all motion detected videos, users will now receive a textual description summarizing the captured activity. This allows you to quickly determine whether an alert is important or negligible.

This feature leverages computer vision technology to analyze video content and automatically generates simple, clear explanations. For example, a notification might say “a person is climbing the stairs with a black dog” or “two people are peering into the white car in the driveway.” The system is tweaked to focus only on the main subject that triggered the motion alert, minimizing unnecessary details and reducing false alarms.
Siminoff described the video description as the basis of the ring's evolving AI strategy. He also suggested future innovations, such as AI-driven notifications that allow multiple motion events to be integrated into a single alert for a more streamlined user experience. Additionally, the company plans to develop custom anomaly alerts that will notify users only if abnormal or unexpected activity occurs on their property.
Currently, video descriptions are available in beta mode for Ring Protection Home Subscribers in the US and Canada. This feature only supports English at this stage and can be activated via the Ring Mobile app.
Ring's latest AI initiative is part of Amazon's broad efforts to integrate advanced AI tools into smart home products, making home surveillance more intuitive and time-consuming. By introducing features such as video descriptions, Ring is positioned to provide more intelligent and proactive security solutions that provide meaningful context and greater peace of mind.
