Amazon Prime Video is rolling out a video summary feature aimed at allowing viewers to brush up on key plot points from past episodes and seasons before playing new ones.
The AI-driven product uses synchronized narration, dialogue, and music to create “theatrical-quality” season summaries. This feature builds on X-Ray Recaps, launched last year, which summarizes episodes in text format without spoilers.
The summary can be accessed from the button that appears next to the trailer button on the show page. This feature is available in beta on select English Prime Original series in the US. Fallout, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, Upload, Bosch, and rig.
Recaps are not new, but they typically occur within a particular episode or, in a linear paradigm, just before the episode begins. With the new Prime Video settings, recaps will be available as stand-alone elements alongside other program material.
According to Prime Video, each video summary is created through a multi-step process. Generative AI tools analyze the season’s key plot points and character arcs to determine key moments that will resonate with viewers for the next season. Once the most engaging video clips are identified, the system combines them with audio effects, dialogue snippets, and music. These elements are interwoven with comprehensive AI-generated narration.
“Video Recaps is a breakthrough application of generative AI for streaming,” Gerard Medioni, vice president of technology at Prime Video, said in a statement. “This first-of-its-kind feature demonstrates Prime Video’s continued commitment to innovation and making the viewing experience more accessible and enjoyable for our customers.”
Prime Video is increasing its use of AI tools in its live sports coverage and advertising operations. On a larger corporate level, Amazon this week announced a $15 billion bond offering, with proceeds to help fund its continued push into AI. Technology spending is expected to reach $125 billion in 2025 as Amazon competes with other tech giants in the fast-growing sector.
