Alibaba began rolling out ChatGPT-style technology on Thursday as Chinese tech giants seek to take the lead in the domestic artificial intelligence race.

Last month, Alibaba announced Tongyi Qianwen, its large-scale language model. This is a system that is trained on vast amounts of data to recognize and generate content.

Alibaba’s cloud computing division, which leads the AI ​​field, announced Thursday that Tongyi Qianwen will be integrated into a digital assistant called Tingwu.

Alibaba says its AI-powered assistant, Tongyi Tingwu, can analyze multimedia content and generate text summaries from video and audio files.

Tongyi Tingwu, which is now in public testing, will first be integrated into DingTalk, a business-centric messaging service operated by Alibaba.

“We live in an era where an increasing amount of video and audio is consumed in various formats every day. We aim to make content faster, better understood and easier to share,” said Jingren Zhou, CTO of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, in a press release.

Alibaba said it plans to release more features for Tongyi Tingwu later this year, including real-time translation of multimedia content between English and Chinese. The service will be a plug-in for Google’s Chrome web browser.

An Alibaba spokesperson told CNBC that the company will work with enterprise cloud customers to build customized AI products based on Tongyi Qianwen’s large-scale language model.

Alibaba’s latest product rollout comes at a time when Chinese tech giants are touting AI capabilities as a way to boost the growth of their own businesses, which have been hit by a slowing domestic economy and tightening government regulations. rice field.

In March, Chinese search giant Baidu announced Ernie Bot, a ChatGPT competitor, but the company is awaiting regulatory approval for its release. Baidu also plans to roll out the technology across its products.
