[TAIPEI] Alibaba Group Holding is adding new data centers in Malaysia and the Philippines to pursue artificial intelligence (AI)-driven growth.
The Hangzhou-based company Cloud Unit will launch its third data center in Malaysia this week and will open a second data center in the Philippines in October, the statement released on Wednesday (July 2) said.
Alibaba Cloud also said it is launching a global competency centre in Singapore to accelerate AI adoption across the industry. The centre said it will help over 5,000 companies and 100,000 developers access advanced AI models.
“Globalization is Alibaba Cloud's long-term strategy,” Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu said in a video message recorded at the company's event held in Singapore on Wednesday.
Alibaba has repeatedly added its commitment to accelerate the construction of global cloud networks in China, Japan, Japan, South Korea, the Middle East, Europe and the US over the next three years, spending more than US$53 billion on AI infrastructure over the period.
Best known for its e-commerce business in China, Alibaba has been growing its cloud services by charging AI and building standalone offerings around the Qwen AI model. It also announced its infrastructure investments in Thailand, Mexico and South Korea.
In the wake of Deepseek's emergence on the global stage, Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu declared in February that the company's “primary purpose” is now artificial general information. This is the industry's goal of building AI systems with human-level intellectual capabilities. Bloomberg
