NEW DELHI: The Center on Friday showcased a new AI-based system that will help detect fake hospital bills, fake medical documents and fraud under the Ayushman Bharat Health Insurance Scheme.The tool was launched at the AB PM-JAY Automated Adjudication Hackathon Showcase 2026, organized by the Union Ministry of Health, National Health Authority (NHA), IndiaAI Mission and IISc Bangalore.Officials said the AI system was aimed at reducing fraud, speeding up settlement of insurance claims and increasing transparency under Prime Minister Ayushman Bharat.Technologies on display included a multilingual OCR system that can scan and classify medical documents, extract data from low-quality records, and verify compliance with standard of care guidelines.Another set of AI tools demonstrated the ability to analyze X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs to help verify diagnoses and treatment claims submitted by hospitals.The team also unveiled an AI model that can identify falsified discharge summaries, falsified claims records, ghost beneficiaries, and deepfake-generated medical documents used for fraudulent claims.NHA CEO Dr. Sunil Kumar Barnwal said India is one of the first countries in the Global South to develop a health AI benchmarking platform using India-specific datasets.Officials said the initiative aims to create a faster, more transparent digital billing system while reducing the manual burden on the government’s flagship health insurance program.
