AI technology aims to reduce 40,000 US road deaths per year

AI technology is being used around us to increase safety, and recent innovations aim to help prevent traffic accidents.

“To see 40,000 people dying on our roads a year is one of the biggest crises in the United States,” said Paul Zamsky, vice president of Rekor Systems.

Rekor Systems was founded in 2017 and aims to make drivers safer using AI and road data.

“We were able to either detect where the crash occurred without waiting for a 911 call, or identify potential precautions and work with agencies to identify high-risk areas so that we could prevent the crash from occurring,” Zamsky said.

Zamsky said the technology has been published in pilot format for several years across the US and will not only use historical data from crash hotspots.

“There's the weather. There's the driving behavior in context. You're spinning, accelerated, slowing, you're going on, you're going on an event, you're going on, you're going on construction,” he said.

Data from cars can help companies identify dangerous roads and possible solutions. Zamsky said all the data they get is anonymous and in a aggregated way. He said the car almost acts as a virtual sensor.

“This allows you to really see what's going on on the roads without being placed on the side of the roads so you can understand the physical infrastructure, millions of dollars of hardware, cameras and those roads,” Zamsky said.
