The country's spending on artificial intelligence (AI) could triple to $5 billion by 2027, according to an Intel-IDC report released Tuesday.

According to the report, Indian companies spent $1,703.8 million on AI in 2023.

“AI spending in India is expected to grow to $5 billion at a CAGR of 31.5% from 2023 to 2027. AI will be ubiquitous by 2027.” said Sharath Srinivasamurthy, associate vice president at IDC.

He said major spending of $209 million in 2023 was driven by AI infrastructure provisioning and related software.

This was followed by enhanced customer service agents at $168.8 million, digital assistants at $113.1 million, enhanced threat intelligence at $100 million, and program advisor recommendation systems at $97.1 million.

“Infrastructure development will continue to be the biggest driver of total spending,” Srinivasamurthy said.

Santosh Viswanathan, India regional vice president and managing director at Intel, said India is preparing for AI as around 20 per cent of the world's data is produced domestically and India is the third largest global market. He said that it is in place.

Viswanathan said India leads the world in terms of availability of technical skills.
