Artificial intelligence (AI) is being used in new research to combat mobile cyber threats and protect phone users.
AgenticDeviceShield is described as a “new form of cyber defense that works directly on mobile devices” and is being led by experts from the University of Wolverhampton (UoW) and the University of Lancashire.
This project aims to protect phone users from fraud, spyware and digital fraud without sending personal data to the cloud.
A UoW spokesperson said the system is equipped with so-called agent AI, which can work independently, make decisions and respond to cyber threats in real time.
Other features of this project include on-device monitoring and alerts that work even when the device is offline or in an area with weak phone signal.
“AgenticDeviceShield aims to reduce digital harm and support more secure access to critical online services by building intelligent, privacy-protecting security directly into smartphones and tablets,” a university spokesperson said.
Modern cyberattacks include phishing scams, deepfakes, malicious apps, and more.
Professor Md Arafatur Rahman, who leads the project at UoW, added: “AgenticDeviceShield represents a move towards a security system that can reason, explain and act locally, delivering intelligent and humane protection.”
