AI outperforms radiologists in detecting pancreatic cancer

“Our findings show that AI can be a valuable support for radiologists in the difficult task of detecting pancreatic cancer,” said Dawid Rutkowski, a doctoral student in the Department of Clinical Sciences, Interventions and Technology (CLINTEC).

The researchers' next step is to consider how AI can be used to follow up patients with cysts or precursors to pancreatic cancer. These patients are often monitored with routine tests and imaging tests, and AI could help improve assessment in this situation.

“We are currently aiming to advance prospective studies to test our AI systems in clinical settings, but we are doing so with extreme caution,” said Dawid Rutkowski.

The project also involves a wide network of international partners, including the Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins University, Massachusetts General Hospital, National Taiwan University, University of Ulsan School of Medicine, German Cancer Research Center, and the University of Oslo.

This study was funded by the European Union and conducted without any known conflicts of interest.
