Alia Bhatt's latest deepfake video, which shows her donning a black kurta and putting on makeup while taking part in the popular 'Get Ready With Me' trend, has created a stir on Instagram. This is not the first time that such a doctored video featuring Alia has been circulating online.
Prior to this, a deepfake video that superimposed Alia Bhatt's face with that of actress Wamiqa Gabbi had gone viral, while another doctored video showed a woman making obscene gestures using a superimposed version of Alia's face.
Repeated incidents like this have raised concerns among Instagram users about the misuse and ethical implications of artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
“AI is becoming more dangerous by the day,” one user said. “AI is getting scary,” another said. “I really hope consent is given to using AI that uses real human faces,” another friend of Alia Bhatt said.
So far, deepfakes featuring many celebrities have appeared on the internet, including Rashmika Mandanna, Kajol, Katrina Kaif, Aamir Khan, Ranveer Singh and Sara Tendulkar.
The government has directed all intermediaries, including social media platforms like Instagram and X, to ensure that users do not violate prohibited content rules under the IT Act, aiming to combat the alarming rise in deepfakes. Both the creation and distribution of deepfakes will attract heavy penalties of up to Rs 10 lakh fine and up to three years imprisonment, according to the government.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern over the misuse of AI in creating deepfake videos, terming it a “great concern”. The Prime Minister emphasised that the age of artificial intelligence requires responsible use of technology and stressed the importance of ethical considerations in technological advancements.
