Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay on Thursday said the AI Impact Summit to be held in India has “global significance” as well as significance for the Global South, noting that India is a rapidly emerging center of technological growth and the artificial intelligence revolution.

In an interview with ANI, he said, “I am happy to be in India to participate in the AI Impact Summit. You could say that this is the first summit to be held in the Global South. I have heard from several people that this is the first time that the AI Summit is being held in the Global South. That is certainly true, but more than the Global South, the AI Summit being held in India has truly global importance, not just in the Global South.”

He added that India is “rapidly becoming the epicenter of technological growth and the AI revolution.”

Tobgay thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said he was “deeply grateful” for the invitation to participate in the summit. Highlighting the long-standing ties between India and Bhutan, he said the two countries have enjoyed “very close and successful cooperation” especially in the field of renewable energy. “India and Bhutan have worked very closely together for decades and we have enjoyed the support of the Indian government in developing hydropower.”

Looking forward, Mr. Tobgay outlined the potential for cooperation that brings together clean energy and emerging technologies. “Going forward, we see partnerships in two related areas: one is to strengthen the development of the partnership to harness fast-flowing rivers to generate clean, green, renewable energy; and the other is to harness this clean, green, renewable energy at Gelephu Mindfulness City in Bhutan to achieve our common goal of artificial intelligence.”

He added that such cooperation will further strengthen India-Bhutan ties and contribute to sustainable technological development in the region. Earlier on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Tobgay on the sidelines of the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi.
