AI helps to be evident in Italy's hidden earthquakes

(Web Desk) – Researchers used artificial intelligence to assess the earthquake risks of Campi Flegrei, an Italian volcanic region of 500,000 people, predicted and mitied the impact of future seismic activity.

The technology revealed that there were four times more earthquakes in previously detected areas. Researchers suggest that this more accurate data will help shape public responses to future earthquakes and keep residents safer.

Campi Flegrei Caldera is an active volcanic field located west of Naples. The volcano is responsible for producing two of Europe's biggest eruptions, but this new study shows that eruptions may not be the main concern of the residents.

“One of Campi Flegrei's biggest short-term concerns is not an eruption, but a moderate earthquake at shallow depth,” said Greg Beroza, a professor of geophysics at Stanford University in the US and co-author of the study.

The area is currently experiencing a period of significant seismic activity, with five earthquakes above the magnitude 4 recorded in the first eight months of this year.

“Seismic activity can change at any time, and that may be the most important part of this study. This ability to gain a clear view is currently working,” says Belosa.

If scientists have access to more accurate seismic data, such as fault location and length, it can help researchers determine the extent of future earthquake magnitudes. Providing this information to city planners and residents is important to mitigate the risks that may arise in Campi Flegrei.
