Artificial intelligence in schools can be a great educational tool. At least, one educator believes so.
Vernon schools are taking steps to ensure that the program ChatGPT is not abused by students. An artificial intelligence program that understands and responds to human language.
ChatGPT “learned” a large amount of data, including books, websites, and articles. For example, if someone asks his ChatGPT for an overview of World War I, he can get pretty accurate information about the war.
Vernon’s school has already seen some students use the program to try to cheat their academics. Encourage teachers to implement new schoolwork and homework methods to avoid abuse of AI technology.
“As technology advances, teachers who traditionally use essays, such as English and social studies teachers, are concerned,” said School District 22 Supt.Christine Perkins
Josh Vance is Assistant Director of Innovation and Technology for the 22nd School District and believes technology can help education. For example, it can be used to tailor coursework for students with different reading levels.
“For example, what if I could copy and paste an article from Castanet into ChatGPT and rewrite it at a 4th grade reading level?” Vance explains.
“It spits it out on all sorts of different levels for different readers. It really differentiates learning and seeing kids who are a little bit faster than some of the other tools we have. can.”
Another way the program can be fully integrated into the classroom is by using it as a tool to teach critical thinking skills to children. Ask the program for information and ask the student to verify the information and confirm how accurate it is.
For now, Vance believes the program will be used as a tool to spark ideas in the classroom and assist teachers. It means streamlining your daily work.
This fall, Vernon will host the Innovate-ED conference at Vernon’s secondary school. Teachers from across the state will be meeting to discuss specifics about school technology.
Educators consider ideas for “using technology to enhance and deepen student learning.”
Vance hopes that ChatGPT will be the topic of discussion during the conference. Vernon’s teacher will explore AI technology and hopefully share his findings at a conference this fall.
“Technology is exciting, isn’t it?” Vance said. “When you can incorporate it into the classroom and be on the cutting edge of it. Kids get excited about it.”
