AI features on flagship phones strip off clothing to reveal bare skin

AI News

AI features are becoming increasingly prevalent in smartphones. Until a few years ago, AI algorithms were limited to automatically optimizing your phone's camera settings depending on the shooting scene. Today, AI is used to edit photos and videos, answer questions, and conduct real-time phone conversations between people who speak different languages.

However, not all AI features will be welcomed by smartphone users. According to Guang Ming Daily (via Gizmochina), the just-announced Huawei Pura 70 Ultra top-of-the-line flagship model comes with an AI-based object removal feature that works on photos. Several posts on social media platform Weibo stated that the Pura 70 Ultra's object removal feature accidentally removed a part of the clothing worn by the subject in the photo, making it look like a body part covered by clothing. Examples are included to show how the supposed parts are revealed.
Huawei has acknowledged that there is a problem here, and blames the problem on the AI algorithm of the “Smart AI Retouch” function. The company says it will make appropriate changes in future system updates. But until that happens, this feature is useful for creating pornographic images. Please note that what you see when undressed is not the subject's actual body. For the parts that AI reproduces when erasing clothing, AI more realistically reproduces the skin color of the photographer.

A lot of people talk about the dark side of AI, and this seems to be one of those situations. We hope Huawei can quickly eliminate this bug and prevent malicious actors from using these AI photos of her to shame or blackmail the photo subjects.
