Once the darling of global employment, the technology industry is now facing a sharp slowdown. Amid a wave of layoffs and hiring freezes, America's largest job site Indeed warns that not all tech jobs are created equal anymore. Job seekers should be aware that demand is changing rapidly.
Technology jobs are rapidly cooling down. A new report from Indeed reveals that even as demand for AI and cloud expertise skyrockets, job openings for traditional roles have declined significantly.
“Many positions are losing momentum,” said Brendon Barnard, senior economist at Indeed, urging professionals to reevaluate their career paths.
A role that has fallen out of favor
- Front-end web developer: Replaced by low-code platforms and design templates.
- QA tester: Automated tools are making manual testing obsolete.
- IT support specialist: Cloud systems and self-service technologies are reducing in-house needs.
- Blockchain developer: Post-crypto recession and regulation outlook is bleak.
The power to drive change
- AI and automation: More efficient teams, smarter systems.
- Remote work: Reduces traditional IT infrastructure needs.
- Economic note: Recruitment focuses on innovation and impact.
Barnard added: “While there is no single cause linking AI to the sharp decline, the trend toward automation is likely driving this weakness.”
Some roles are bucking this trend thanks to their strategic importance, such as AI/ML engineers, cybersecurity analysts, cloud architects, and data scientists.
