A group of scientists at the University of Georgia has devised a new approach to finding and classifying new planets far from Earth. They discovered exoplanets using machine learning, an extension of artificial intelligence (AI).

A recent study demonstrated that AI can accurately detect the presence of exoplanets by examining protoplanetary disks (the gas around newly formed stars). The recently published results represent a first step towards employing machine learning to recognize previously ignored exoplanets.

“We used conventional techniques to identify the planets, but our model tells us to run simulations of them,” said Jason Terry, lead author of the study, in a statement. I have shown you exactly where the is.

“Applying the model to a series of older observations identified a disk that had already been analyzed but was not known to contain planets. As with previous discoveries, we performed simulations of the disk. and discovered that planets could re-form, making observations.”

“It only took about an hour to analyze that entire catalog and find strong evidence of a new planet at a particular location, so as the dataset grows ever larger, more important locations for these types of techniques become apparent. I think there is.”
