JAKARTA (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology said here on Thursday that technological developments such as artificial intelligence (AI) can support the advancement of education at university level.
Abdul Haris, director-general of higher education, research and technology at the ministry, said AI developments in universities will facilitate learning for students and provide solutions to learning challenges.
At the event “Leading the Effective Integration of GenAI in Higher Education,'' he said, “The higher education level will be supported by rapid developments in technology that can provide solutions and convenience for students to learn better.'' I hope so.”
Universities are now required to carry out a digital transformation of their learning systems, moving away from traditional models and switching to digital-based education, he explained.
Harris pointed out that AI is now widely used in the world of education, for example, teaching and learning resources can be generated by AI, and assessment and evaluation can be performed using AI.
It is also useful for lecturers' administrative work.
“The benefits are many. For research, it's Mendeley. It's the simplest, but also the most convenient,” he added.
Another AI technology is ChatGPT, which works conversationally.
Students typically ask their teachers questions during class, but now they can ask questions and get answers instantly with ChatGPT.
However, Harris said advances in AI could pose a threat to the education sector without proper regulations surrounding its implementation.
“We have to supervise its use so that it doesn't become harmful. I think it needs to be regulated because if it's not controlled, there will be a lot of harm,” he added.
