Linkeipe, Sweden. Helsing and Saab have completed live flight tests for their AI agents on their Gripen e Fighter Jet. Meanwhile, AI has performed air combat operations in scenarios that go beyond audiovisuality, the company announced in a statement.
The test flight occurred in the Baltic Sea on May 28th and June 3rd as part of a program funded by the Swedish Defense Materials Agency (FMV). During testing, control of the aircraft was handed over to Centaur AI agents in Helsing. This led to operations on the second human-controlled Gripen aircraft and issued a fire order.
According to the company, Centaur uses self-play reinforcement learning, using sensor inputs in real time to attract targets and autonomously avoid threats. Safety pilots were present to assume control as needed.
The test was conducted less than six months after the project began, and the company said it leverages Gripen E's software-defined architecture to integrate AI systems. Saab and Helsing plan to continue testing in increasingly complex mission scenarios to explore joint human machine combat operations
