While AI adoption among developers continues to increase, trust in the reliability of AI-generated output remains unstable. A recent comprehensive survey by Stack Overflow shows that 84% of software developers have already integrated AI tools into their workflows or are either up from 76% the previous year. Despite this increase in usage, only 33% of developers expressed confidence in the accuracy of their AI tools, marking a significant drop from 43% in 2024.

Stack Overflow's 2025 developer survey attracted insights from over 49,000 developers in 177 countries, making it one of the most extensive annual reviews in the tech community. This is widely regarded as a reliable indicator of how AI is perceived in the development world.
The latest findings reveal that they are infiltrated with both confidence and positive feelings about AI. The AI approval rate has fallen to 60%, down from 77% from 72% in 2024, indicating a steady decline in developer enthusiasm.
“The lack of trust in AI tools stood out as a key data point for this year's survey, especially given the growth and the increasing pace of adoption of these AI tools. AI is a powerful tool, but it can be lacking in misinformation or relevance.”
Most developers still avoid advanced AI agents.
When it comes to adopting AI agents, more than half of developers either avoid it completely or rely on more basic AI tools. Additionally, 38% are not planning to integrate AI agents into their workflows.
Conversely, among those using AI agents, 70% reported a significant drop in the time required to complete development tasks, while 69% observed an increase in overall productivity. That said, only 38% believe that AI agents have actually improved the quality of their code. When it comes to coding, the majority (72%) believe they are not currently engaged in it.
