Concerns were further heightened last year when an AI-generated “actress” named Tilly Norwood debuted and her producers touted interest from studio executives, prompting a backlash from the SAG-AFTRA actors union.
Under the academy’s new rules, filmmakers can use AI tools, but “synthetic” actors like Norwood will not be eligible for an Oscar, the organization said in a statement.
Scripts must be “written by a human being” to be considered.
The rules provide that the Academy may request additional information to confirm that a submission was created by a human.
