I decided to take a little detour from my usual Grammar Guru content and focus on a topic even more inevitable than a misplaced apostrophe: artificial intelligence. Over the next few months, we'll explore different aspects of AI's amazing capabilities. and Its significant limitations. Maybe you're already using AI at work or at home. Perhaps you are concerned that it will replace human jobs. Maybe you're feeling overwhelmed and don't know where to start. This series is everyone.
In this series, we want you to feel like you're having coffee with your AI-obsessed friend, who's affectionate but firm about one thing. It's time to understand and talk about it.
My guide to AI basics is AI 101. It includes four sections: What is AI, Why should we care? How is AI being used? and Examples of how AI can make our daily lives easier. Masu. Take a look below and read on.
What is AI?
AI, or artificial intelligence, is a general term for a vast field of technology that creates computer systems or software that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence.
These tasks range from recognizing speech, making decisions, translating languages, navigating the physical world, and identifying patterns in data. AI aims to help humans immeasurably by making machines smart enough to handle complex tasks. It's not just a few technology companies that are leading this effort.hundreds of, Thousands, if not more, are figuring out how to enhance every aspect of their lives with AI.

Why should we care about AI?
We hope you will see AI as an exciting set of tools that, when used wisely and skillfully, can enhance human productivity, creativity, health, and safety. AI is exciting, complex, and becoming more capable by the second. It is essential that we actively engage with it, rather than resisting it. And it's about understanding how it works for us, not replacing us.
Whether you know it or not, AI is already improving your life. Here are some widely adopted applications of what I call AI. passive Use the. They are “passive” and we don't even think about them anymore. We know they are there and available to us. Most of these are standard equipment in phones, computers, cars, and other “smart” devices.
- When you open your phone with FaceID
- When viewing Netflix recommendations
- When your fitness tracker suggests a bedtime of 9 p.m.
- When Waze tells you how to avoid traffic
- When you see a creepy spot ad for a product you've always wanted.
- When asking Siri or Alexa for the weather forecast
- When Google predicts the rest of your weird medical questions
- When chatting with a customer service support bot about missing packages
Do you have an overview of how pervasive AI is? It's everywhere. But the above list is just the beginning. Much of what AI can do is still unknown, and humans are still in the “early adopter” stage. The possibilities are endless.
Do you know how AI is changing these aspects of life?
Here are some topics and related AI efforts you may not know about. We will discuss some of these topics in more detail later in the series.
health care
AI algorithms use image data to diagnose diseases earlier and more accurately. Personal health data can also be analyzed to tailor treatments specific to a particular person. During surgery, robotics and AI are becoming much more precise, improving recovery times and outcomes.
finance
Robo-investor models are increasingly capable of assessing risk and making quick trading decisions based on market trends. AI can better and faster detect fraud by analyzing anomalous patterns within accounts and can provide personalized budgeting tools. AI analysis of a wide range of data points makes credit scoring more accurate and dynamic.
write
AI can help you write more concise emails, create more effective presentations, and outline documents when you get stuck. They also become more adept at honing their grammar and spelling, adjusting their tone and style, and detecting plagiarism. While it will never replace human thinking or analytical/creative writing, there are many ways in which AI can help.
shopping
You probably already know that AI can find and recommend products based on your browsing and purchase history. (Okay, maybe that's a little too good to be true.) Virtual “try-on” allows you to see how something will look on your body or in your home. Reverse image search helps you find similar items. AI-powered chatbots work around the clock to solve problems, provide basic customer service, and answer questions.
family life
More and more homes are becoming “smart” by letting AI learn our habits, making heating and cooling more energy efficient, enhancing security measures, and creating the perfect ambience of lighting in every room. Masu. Devices like Alexa act as virtual assistants that can create to-do lists, set reminders, and remind you when to leave for work based on traffic conditions. AI suggests simple lifestyle improvements to make your home happier.
There are many ways to leverage AI to make your daily life easier. This is your homework.
We highly recommend anyone interested in AI to create an account and start interacting with generative AI software like ChatGPT (by OpenAI), Gemini (by Google), Claude (by Anthropic), or Copilot (by Microsoft) To do. Many are free, but paid options offer a more robust experience. ChatGPT4 is my recommendation because it does a lot for its $20/month price.
When you're using a leading AI platform, think of it as a genius assistant willing to take on any project or task, no matter how mundane. Consider yourself an expert on everything you can think of. Next, tell the platform what you need.
For example, “We need you to be a dinner party food prep expert with special expertise in recipes that can be prepared ahead of time, are easy to make, and have a big visual impact. Can you understand?” Proper prompting is key to achieving results. Be specific and conversational. Get hooked and ask for help! Getting good at prompting requires some trial and error. Here are some ideas.
Example 1: Ask people to come up with a salad for a dinner party.
Please tell me the time and your location. Let them know if you have any preferences or limitations. You can also tell them what materials you have on hand. If you don't like what you initially see, please give us feedback on: why You didn't like it. For example, tell them to omit the strawberries and make something with avocado instead.
Once you're happy with a recipe, you'll have step-by-step instructions and a shopping list without having to open a cookbook or Google the messy backstory of a blogger's recipe.
Example #2: Help us plan the perfect trip.
Someone on our team recently used ChatGPT4 to help plan a mother-daughter hiking trip out west. She told them how much time she had and when she was going on the trip. She said she still loves long hikes, despite some limitations in using her knees to change elevation. ChatGPT helped her filter out areas that were inappropriate for her.
Now she plans to go to Bryce Canyon and Lake Powell with her daughter. And she has a detailed itinerary from Las Vegas Airport to Bryce Canyon that includes short hikes and plenty of places to explore and eat on the way there.
Example #3: Are you thinking of starting a home garden?
Let them become gardening experts. Tell us where you live, what type of sun/shade you get, and what you want to plant in your garden. Once you start a conversation, keep encouraging them to chat. more Specific information on how to plant, water, and care for your garden. The season for your favorite vegetables may not be over yet.
We hope you have learned the basics of AI.send [email protected] If you have any burning questions about AI, we'll see you next month!
