Advanced Micro Devices has announced a new concept called “Agent Computers” that describes the next evolution of personal computers specifically designed to run AI agents continuously and autonomously. The idea, outlined in the company’s blog post published on March 13, frames agent computing as a transition from humans interacting with applications to AI agents operating applications on behalf of users.
According to AMD, personal computers have historically been designed for direct human interaction, where users open applications and perform tasks step by step. However, AI agents behave differently. You can research, write, summarize, analyze, plan, and execute tasks autonomously while continuously running in the background.
AMD described agent computers as a new class of devices designed to run these AI agents full-time. Instead of interacting with programs manually, users delegate tasks to AI agents, which navigate between tools and services and complete the work automatically.
The company’s vision is that the device will be able to run continuously in home and office environments. Users can assign tasks through messaging platforms and other interfaces, and AI agents will perform the work and report results and summaries.
AMD suggested that this change could change the way knowledge work is performed. For example, an AI agent can analyze data overnight, draft replies to urgent messages, compile meeting instructions, research the competitive landscape, and create summaries while you focus on higher-level tasks.
The company emphasized that running these workloads locally has advantages compared to relying entirely on cloud infrastructure. AMD says users increasingly want AI systems that enhance their privacy, reduce daily usage costs, and give them control over their data.
To support these workloads, AMD highlighted systems with Ryzen AI Max+ processors, including the Ryzen AI Max+ 395. The company says this allows advanced AI models to run locally while supporting multiple parallel AI agents.
AMD also noted that platforms such as Framework Desktop have the potential to serve as powerful agent computing systems because they can run local models and support multi-agent workloads.
The company described the change as part of a broader evolution in computing. In AMD’s view, traditional PCs will continue to be machines that you interact with directly, but agent computers will be complementary systems that autonomously perform tasks in the background.
AMD concluded that computing is entering the so-called “agent” era, where persistent AI systems work with users and continuously perform tasks across applications.
