With a move that could change the landscape of the video, YouTube will integrate Google's most advanced AI video generation tool, VEO 3, into YouTube shorts later this summer.

YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announced the integration during his keynote address at the Cannes Lions Festival on Wednesday. YouTube creators Amelia Dimoldenberg, Alex Cooper and Brandon Baum participated.

“The possibilities for AI are endless,” Mohan said. “Many things can change with generations. Entertainment itself has changed more dramatically in history than any other era in the last 20 years. Creators have led this revolution.

“My bet for the next 20 years? Creators will turn through formats, blend genres, and push deeper into the mainstream as brand ambassadors, big corporate ventures and visionary storytellers,” he continued. “The community continues to surprise us with the power of collective fandom, and cutting-edge AI technology pushes the limits of human creativity. My biggest bet is that YouTube continues to be at the stage where everything happens.

YouTube already uses older generation VEO as its Dreamscreen background generation tool, but the VEO 3 is a substantial upgrade. The product was launched in 2023 and has been repeated ever since.

The company has also been actively working ahead of potential issues and controversy, partnering with CAAs and several top creators to develop tools that allow celebrities and other well-known people to control their portraits on the platform.

While the video, already created by VEO 3, has gone viral on social platforms that contain concepts that imagine whether historical or fictional characters are video bloggers, Mohan has framed the integration into shorts for “opening new creative lanes” for creators.

Shorts have become a strategic order for YouTube, as platforms like Tiktok and Instagram Reels are also fighting for stocks in short video viewers. YouTube launched the shorts in 2021, and Mohan revealed on Wednesday that it averaged over 200 billion views per day.

Mohan also appealed to the keynote speech, highlighting that YouTube has become a dominant force in entertainment and popular culture to highlight what has become a recurring theme on the platform in recent years, telling the Cannes crowd, “The creators are “Hollywood startups.”

“Like most startups, these creators are rethinking the industry that influenced them, creating new jobs for writers, editors, actors and producers. Some are building cutting-edge studios,” he said.
