“Four or five months ago, he raised his hand on me, so I killed him,” one of the murder suspects was heard saying in a video widely shared on social media hours after a 24-year-old man was shot dead at a cafe in north-east Delhi’s Maujpur area on Friday night, police said, adding that the suspects were on the run and the video was being examined as part of the investigation.

Police said at around 10:28 p.m., a team from the Welcome Police Station rushed to the scene after reports of shots fired at Mr King Lounge and Cafe. Faizan (also known as Fatzi), a resident of Welcome, was found injured at the scene and was immediately taken to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead, the police officer added. The victim’s family claimed that a dispute over a loan led to the murder and that the suspect’s father, Moin Qureshi, was also involved in the murder, but Moin refuted the allegations.

“My father had nothing to do with this. I killed him. Someone told me that my father was in the cafe… None of my family or friends were involved in this, and I did not kill him on anyone’s orders… There were no financial issues between us,” Moin said in the video.

Speaking to reporters at the crime scene, the victim’s brother Salman claimed that the killing happened after a dispute over a loan of Rs 40,000. “My brother was a very simple person. He had borrowed money and when he could not repay it, father and son came to his house and started fighting. Earlier, we had filed a complaint at Bhajanpura police station, but nothing happened,” he said.

He also claimed, “My brother was shot three times, but the police said he fired two shots. One shot hit and penetrated his head, and the second shot hit his chest. He may have been stabbed. He had cuts on his hands, so he must have been in great pain.”

Police said they are reviewing the charges and the circumstances leading up to the shooting as part of the investigation. Officers said a forensic team was sent to collect evidence from the cafe and surrounding area, and CCTV footage was being analyzed to piece together the sequence of events.

Calling for swift action, Salman said: “We just want justice. We want both father and son arrested and strictest possible action taken against them. Police say they are on the run.”

The victim’s mother alleged police indifference and said the family did not receive adequate support after the killing. “My child is dead and no one is helping me. I am already unwell and now I have lost my little son. Where can I go?” she said.

Police said a case was registered at Welcome police station under Section 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita Act and relevant provisions of the Arms Act. Investigation teams have been deployed to carry out raids at suspicious locations and local informants are working to gather clues, the police officer added. With PTI input
