Apple's key AI features may not be free forever: Report

AI News

At the recent WWDC 2024 event, Apple unveiled Apple Intelligence, a suite of AI features for Apple products. At the moment, it is said to be available for free on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. However, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said it won't be free forever. He said that at some point, Apple will split Apple Intelligence into two tiers: one will be free but with limited functionality, and the paid version will offer a full suite of AI features on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Gurman predicts that the paid version will be called Apple Intelligence+. Furthermore, he reveals that Apple will likely make more money from these paid services than from device sales, so Apple Intelligence will be a key focus area for the tech giant.

He also noted that Apple plans to cut subscription revenue from all AI partners that integrate into its devices.

On the iPhone side, Apple Intelligence will be available on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple's AI is also expected to be featured in the upcoming iPhone 16 series, Macs and iPads with M-series chips.

In a separate report, Gurman revealed that Apple also plans to bring AI to its Vision Pro mixed reality headset, though it's not expected to roll it out anytime soon. The main challenge here is rethinking how features look in mixed reality, rather than on a MacBook or iPhone screen.

Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence lets you prioritize notifications on your iPhone, writing tools allow you to summarize, revise and make suggestions, and the “Image Playground” feature even lets you generate images for free by prompting you, similar to Meta AI.

Apple Intelligence will be able to take “actions” on your behalf – ask it to open a specific file or play audio from a podcast a contact has sent you – and see the context and respond accordingly.
