Veteran Hollywood star Morgan Freeman has slammed the alleged unauthorized use of an AI-generated version of his voice.
The Shawshank Redemption star appeared on X to thank fans for their support after becoming the latest celebrity to fall victim to artificial intelligence (AI).
The actor became legendary for his voiceover work in films such as March of the Penguins, The Shawshank Redemption and Million Dollar Baby.
Known for his captivating voice, the 87-year-old actor has become a popular target for AI-generated impersonations.
Morgan Freeman has slammed people using AI-generated versions of his voice after a series of TikTok videos made by a woman claiming to be his niece went viral.
“Thank you to all my amazing fans for your vigilance and support in highlighting the unauthorised use of an AI voice impersonating me. Your dedication ensures authenticity and honesty come first. I appreciate it,” the Hollywood star wrote in X's post.
He used hashtags such as “AI,” “Fraud,” “Imitation,” and “IdentityProtection” in his posts.
The debate over the use of AI-generated celebrity impersonators began when Scarlett Johansson called out OpenAI for using a voice similar to hers for its AI personal voice assistant, Sky.
The Avengers actress said she was approached by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to use her voice in ChatGPT's conversational format.
But she said she was “shocked, angered and in disbelief” that the AI company had chosen a voice that closely resembled hers, even though she had turned down the offer.
Following Scarlett Johansson's statement, OpenAI suspended the use of its voice assistant and said that its voice was not an imitation of the star.
