Hi, I'm Paz. I'm a New York-based DJ who loves to make people happy through music. Today I'm going head-to-head with Google AI on music and DJing. Now let's try out some Music FX from Google's test kitchen and see what happens. Let's have them make a disco song. 100 and 22 BPM, 2024-ish tech house faces and piano. Okay. This isn't exactly what I was looking for. Pretty cool. Now let's try something different. 100 and 8 BPM 70s funk and soul song. Bass guitar and smooth synths. Let's try this. This is really really cool. This isn't exactly what I was looking for, but I don't think it's because of the music. FX. I think I need to explain more about what I'm looking for. Let's do one last hip-hop trap song for 1, 20. 74 B PM. Big thundering drums. I don't know. Yes, this is what I asked the music to do. It's an effect. I didn't like the results. Okay, let's add something, let's add a side chain snare. Let's see if this makes it more dynamic. This is pretty cool. It actually builds on what's already been done. Which means it's better to optimize this. I think music X is great. I actually think it did exactly what I asked it to do. If I was a musician or a producer, I would have a much bigger library and I'd be able to say, I want this, I want this. I'm excited to see what would happen if I was more specific. Now, I'm going to switch to DJ mode. I'm not really sure what this is, but let's find out. Let's get started. Let's make it Bira Funk, big bass, upbeat. We need big bass. Yes. Bira Funk. We want it to be a Bira Funk track. Okay. Yeah, we need it to be upbeat. Actually, let's add some steel drums here. Let's see what happens. OK. Because it feels like music. I'm not really impressed. The music is basically generic music put together to sound like music you know, but it's generally royalty free. Let's try it again. OK. This is good. Let's move these sliders and see if it changes what we're doing, if we can do it during a live performance. It's interesting. But frankly, I think we're limited by the structure of the music. I don't think we can change too many things, and it can be very subtle, and maybe it's because I don't really like what it gave me. I was hoping for more dramatic changes from these sliders, but the nuance is nice. I'll see if we can figure out how to make them understand that it's really cool to have really simple sliders to change these little parameters. Now, let's hear what Google Gemini has to say. If they're saying great things, I'll give them a point. If they're saying bad things, I'll take a point off. DJs are going to be excited about AI. AI is not going to replace them, it's going to be a powerful tool. AI is going to replace a lot of really bad DJs. If you're just playing the same playlist, like the top 50 on Spotify, I think AI can probably do it as well as you can, and probably at a fraction of your cost. Imagine a software that analyzes music and suggests perfect transitions, or reads the crowd and picks the next high energy track. This allows the DJ to focus on creativity, like instantly remixing and interacting with the crowd. AI can be the secret weapon to take a DJ's set to the next level. This is true. If this works at scale and with local language models on edge computing, it can be a real asset for a DJ and the key to further increase creativity is to suggest songs from my library. I'm not really interested in listening to billions of songs or suggestions of what everyone is playing. I want something that fits more with my taste and what I do as a DJ, or something that actually helps me in 5 words or less. What makes a good DJ? A good DJ is someone who leaves the dance floor. The crowd is happy. Plus music plus magic. I love that. As a DJ, what is the hardest part about reading the room and connecting with the crowd? What is the most important gear for a DJ to always have the right musical ear for the crowd? What is the highest paying DJ job? 360 DJ writes, produces and puts on their own concerts on a massive scale. It's a massive festival. I don't know what half of it means. So I'm deducting a point on that. What is the lowest paying DJ job where people DJ for free and fuck free bars in exchange for exposure. What is the best song to play at a wedding? It really depends on the crowd. Well, you can play Levels by Avici and you're good to go. Worst song to play at a wedding, depending on the couple. Songs that will fill the dance floor, probably not. You should play breakup anthems. Ah, okay, Gemini has humor too. Okay, that's nice. Why should DJs adopt the I Streamline workflow? That way you have more music and more tools for grooves to play. It makes no sense at all. Why should DJs worry about AI? If you're a bad DJ, it'll just take away your job and ruin the vibe. So yeah, there's work to be done. The biggest mistake DJs make during a set is not recovering from a recognized error. Ignore the dance floor. Seriously. What is the highest compliment a DJ can receive? I don't know about Gemini, but I love the hug of being immersed in music. I don't know what that means either. Music FX is a really great tool. It's really breathtaking, and it's amazing how fast and easy it is to use. It's very easy to use. I think with a FAQ and instruction manual, many people would be able to get up to speed quickly. I think it's a very fun tool, but I'm not sure how it will affect my current DJ workflow. It seems like a tool designed to quickly create almost any music other than DJing, unless you're using it to create original compositions. In that respect, I think it's tailored for musicians. I'd be very excited if this was built in a way that would enhance the DJ workflow. I think it would be really cool to be able to create an intro to a song, for example. If you need to remix your current song, what if AI could do the sound separation and help you create or remix that song further? I think all creators are worried about how AI will affect their lives. But for DJ S, I think AI is going to be amazing when it comes to music organization and music discovery. It's going to save me so much time from Googling. I think it's going to create a lot of efficiencies from the production side. But for now, I still love live music.
