(Reuters) – Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and former chief scientist at OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, said on Wednesday he was starting a new artificial intelligence company.
The company is focused on creating a safe AI environment at a time when some of the biggest tech companies are trying to dominate the generative AI boom.
The company, called Safe Superintelligence, is described on its website as a US company with offices in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv. Sutskever revealed his intention to set up the company in a post on X.
“Because we are focused, we aren't distracted by administrative costs or product cycles; our business model ensures that safety, security and progress are all insulated from short-term commercial pressures,” the post read.
In addition to Sutskever, Safe Superintelligence co-founders include former OpenAI researcher Daniel Levy and Cue co-founder and former Apple AI lead Daniel Gross.
Sutskever left Microsoft-backed OpenAI in May after playing a key role in the dramatic firing and rehiring of CEO Sam Altman last November. After Altman returned, Sutskever was removed from the company's board of directors.
