Many tech experts stated that AI could one day take over human jobs, but there were also more positive opinions. For example, human software engineers worried about losing their jobs as AI can now write code in minutes.
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has often expressed excitement about AI technology and its impact on the world, but in a recent interview, he said that AI cannot replace human software engineers. He said that even in the age of AI, software engineers are still needed. Gates appeared alongside Zerodha founder Nikhil Kamath in the first episode of Kamath's podcast series, “People by WTF.” During the 30-minute conversation, Gates and Kamath delved deep into Gates' early days at Microsoft and the transformative impact that artificial intelligence (AI) has had on various industries, especially software engineering.
Gates expressed optimism about the future of software engineering jobs despite the growing influence of AI. He highlighted AI's potential to increase productivity and serve as educational leaders, citing successful projects in India and the US. “The great thing about this technology is we know it can help in key areas, we know it can create educational leaders. We've seen projects in India and the US that are showing great results. If you can see that AI can just increase the productivity of your work, the potential is incredible,” Gates said of AI's positive contributions.
Regarding concerns about AI potentially replacing software engineers, Gates dismissed them as “overblown.” He asserted that the demand for software engineers will remain strong, saying, “We're going to need software engineers. We're not going to stop needing them.” This reassurance will come as some solace to those worried about job losses due to advances in AI.
Gates acknowledged that AI automation could reach a level where it can replace many jobs in the future, but downplayed the likelihood of this happening within the next 20 years. He acknowledged there is uncertainty about predicting the long-term impact of AI on the workforce, suggesting it is a complex issue that is difficult to predict precisely.
Besides discussing AI, Gates and Kamath touched on a range of topics, including Gates' special relationship with India. Gates looked back fondly on his experiences in India, noting that Microsoft has hired talented IT graduates that have contributed greatly to the company's success. “I've had a great relationship with India. It started with my time at Microsoft. We hired some very bright IT graduates and brought them to Seattle. They then came back to India and established a development center that now has 25,000 employees in four locations. And of course, a lot of the great people that I work with and enjoy so much of Microsoft's success are part of teams hired from India,” Gates said.
