As would be expected, being the “global developers conference” hosted by arguably the world's most important technology company in 2024, AI was front and center in most of Apple's latest updates and features.
While film and video production wasn't Apple's biggest focus this year, it still plays a big role in helping Apple sell some of its iPhone cameras and Vision Pro products, and there are still plenty of highlights worth sharing that might be useful for those in the video (or video-related) industry trying to get ahead of Apple's 2024 lineup of updates.
Let's take a quick look at some of the major highlights of Apple's WWDC 2024.
Apple WWDC 2024 Highlights
So the biggest news overall might just be macOS 15 Sequoia, which Apple unveiled at WWDC, held as always at Apple Park in Cupertino, Calif. The new macOS update brings iPhone mirroring, automatic window tiling, Continuity updates, and for the first time, a cross-platform Passwords app.
iPhone Mirroring in particular will be useful for a variety of creative content and is likely to be one of the most used updates in Apple's update lineup. Safari has also received some updates that are set to use machine learning to provide more information and features to users as they browse the internet. This could be good or bad news for some.
Vision Pro Updates and visionOS 2
Well, we'll be finding out a bit more about these upcoming updates in the coming days, but the thing that has us most excited about WWDC right now is Apple's announcement of Vision OS 2 for its Visio Pro headsets. The OS promises to bring a ton of new updates, including gesture controls, photo updates, and overall more immersive video content features.
Apple also quietly showed off a new dual-lens APS-C camera from Canon, but more on that later. In short, while the Vision Pro isn't reported to be a hot seller, Apple is very interested in using its AR/VR headset as a vehicle to unveil and explore new immersive technologies, many of which may be of interest to film and video professionals looking to dabble in virtual production.
Apple Intelligence and other updates
We also got a ton of updates that show how AI will undoubtedly continue to revolutionize Apple's products, apps, and operating system, with ChatGPT integration apparently on the way, and of course a wide range of AI-powered features being added to many Apple apps and services, such as Siri.
Of course, Apple had a lot to announce at WWDC this year, ranging from updates to iPadOS (which includes the Calculator app for iPad for the first time) to RCS support for Messages. We'll be sifting through all the announcements ourselves and sharing more details about what new video-centric tools and features are coming in the future, so stay tuned.
