For most of us, Apple's annual developer conference may be just a written record. But WWDC 2024 seems poised to bring a ton of news about AI (sorry, Apple Intelligence) in addition to the usual updates to its platforms like iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS. Last WWDC, we saw the company unveil its Vision Pro headset, which was released earlier this year and turned a few early adopters into public nuisances. This year, in addition to AI-powered updates across the company's ecosystem, we've also heard talk that Apple might be preparing an all-new… calculator app. More details will be revealed once the keynote starts today at 10am PST/1pm EST. I, along with my colleague Devindra Hardawar, will be on-site at 8am PST. We'll be bringing you not just the news, but also the most important insights, like how Apple's snacks will be different from Microsoft and Google events. But looking at your schedule, it seems almost certain that there will be some sort of demo area after the keynote. Every year, Apple reserves our time at WWDC, carefully arranging meetings after the keynote, which is usually the biggest clue as to what's to come.

In addition to a possible AI update, rumors suggest a new calculator app may be on the way, possibly coming to Siri. The timing (and some reports) also raise the possibility of an announcement about RCS support in Messages or iMessage. There's also talk of loosening up iOS's homepage grid so that apps don't have to be arranged in a strict row of four icons. Yay?

It's unlikely that Apple will actually announce any new hardware at WWDC, but last year it unveiled the Vision Pro headset and new MacBooks and Macs. If it were to unveil any new gear today, it would likely be a new MacBook featuring the M4 chip that debuted in the iPad Pro a few weeks ago.

I was aroundA recent novelty is the explosion of generative AI, with AI-based image and video generators, tools to automate essays, emails, and reviews, and much more. In the last month, we've seen both Google and Microsoft pushing AI harder than ever at their respective developer conferences. We've learned about Google's impressive Project Astra, the Surface maker's Copilot+ PC initiative, and a host of new laptops.

Every June, hundreds, maybe thousands, of people gather here to see what Apple has in store for iOS, macOS, and more. But this year, rumors are circulating that Apple might finally bow to the industry trend and actually utter the letters AI, a word it has mostly avoided thus far. But of course, in typical Apple fashion, the company is expected to announce something called Apple Intelligence instead. What a lucky coincidence that the letters worked out that way.
