After more than 30 hours of delay, the plane took off from the capital at 21:55 on Friday and landed in San Francisco at 12:45 on Saturday (IST), a flight time of around 16 hours.

“On behalf of Air India, I sincerely apologise for the long delay in your arrival to San Francisco, which was due to several technical delays and other operational constraints,” Air India's vice president and chief operating officer Klaus Gersh said in a letter to passengers on the flight.

According to the letter, dated May 31, Air India offered the passenger “a travel voucher worth $350” for future travel on the airline as a token of its apology.

Passengers also have the option to have the amount credited instead of using it towards their travel.

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by the shortcomings in our service,” Goash said in the letter.

The Delhi-San Francisco flight, which was initially scheduled to take off around 3:30 pm on Thursday, faced significant delays due to various factors including technical glitches, breakdown in the air conditioning system and load issues.

Aviation regulator DGCA on Friday issued a show-cause notice to Air India for delaying some flights and failing to take due care of passengers.

In its show-cause notice, the regulator cited excessive delays of two international flights — AI183 from Delhi to San Francisco on May 30 and AI179 from Mumbai to San Francisco on May 24.
