New Google Search AI features to help you plan, explore, and learn

AI Video & Visuals

In addition to rolling out AI Overview to U.S. search users this week, Google is adding new AI-powered search features to Google Search and Google Search Labs.

New AI-powered features include the ability to adjust AI summaries, multi-step inference capabilities, planning capabilities, AI-organized search results, and the new Google Lens video questions feature. Users must opt in to use new features.

Adjust AI overview

Liz Reid, Google's head of search, explained that with Search Labs, the company can adjust the AI summaries to “simplify words or categorize them in more detail.” Clicking “Simpler” displays a more basic AI summary response to the user. Click “Break it down” to see a more detailed response.

This feature narrows your search results without requiring multiple searches in the same search session.

Multi-level reasoning function

Google Search can now offer multi-step inference using Gemini's step-by-step inference logic. “Rather than having to search your questions in multiple searches, you can ask your most complex questions all at once, keeping in mind the nuances and caveats,” Reid wrote.

The example provided by Google below shows how multi-step inference works. This example shows if you're looking for a new yoga or Pilates studio that's popular in your area, conveniently located for your daily commute, and also offers discounts for new members. You can ask Google Search to “find the best yoga or pilates studios in Boston, and see details about their introductory offers and walk times from Beacon Hill.”

Planning ability

Planners feature allows you to plan what you need right in Google Search. This gives you options and allows you to co-create plans with others. Displays links to recipes on the web that allow you to export their results and replace specific plan details with other options within different plan sets. Additionally, we don't just display search results, we plan them together.

For example, if you search for “create a 3-day meal plan for a group that's easy to prepare,” you'll get a starting point from a variety of recipes on the web. You can swap parts of your plan and export them to Google Docs or Gmail if you like.

The situation is as follows.

Parties, dates, and workouts are planned at Search Labs in the U.S. later this year.

Search results organized by AI

Google Search uses AI to group search results into specific categories. This helps you brainstorm options for your query, says Hema Budaraju, Google's senior director of product, search generative experiences. Google says search results are “categorized under unique AI-generated headings, featuring a wide range of perspectives and content types.”

Search results organized by AI will look like this:

The feature will roll out to Meals and Recipes, and then later this year to Movies, Music, Books, Hotels, Shopping, and more, directly into US English results on Google Search. Not available as an opt-in feature for Google Search Labs.

Lens search by video

Lens Search with Video allows users to record videos and ask questions while recording. Google answers based on your questions. “The ability to ask questions on video takes visual search to a whole new level,” said Reid.

This reminds me of multisearch using images and circles searching using videos.

Here's how this will work when it launches later this year.
