New Jersey Chief Technology Officer Chris Lane told StateScoop in a recent video interview that generative artificial intelligence has the potential to revolutionize state government, but needs proper oversight to ensure it's used ethically. He said that this must be done responsibly.
Lane said there is a challenge in balancing the benefits and risks of generative AI in state government. He said the law is key to protecting data privacy in New Jersey.
“There's so much going on in terms of capabilities, hype and promises of better services provided by artificial intelligence. But at the same time, we have to run our government,” Lane said. Told. “We have to make sure we continue to use residents' data in a way that gives them confidence that we are good stewards. Yet we don't want to miss this opportunity, so It’s really a balance.”
Lane said he hopes to complete a report from the Governor's AI Task Force in late 2023 with recommendations for the responsible use of generative AI in New Jersey. He also said he plans to work with state legislatures and the governor's office to fund and regulate generative AI efforts.
