Meta (formerly Facebook) CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently announced plans to integrate generative artificial intelligence (AI) into popular platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Messenger.
Generative AI is gaining popularity in apps such as Dall-E, ChatGPT, and Midjourney, enabling users to create a wide variety of content. Today, big tech companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Adobe are also incorporating generative AI into their products.
At an internal meeting, Zuckerberg revealed Meta’s intention to include generative AI-powered text, image and video generators for Instagram, Facebook and Messenger. He highlighted significant advances in generative AI over the past year and expressed the company’s determination to incorporate this technology into all of its products.
Meta has invested heavily in AI research and will shift its focus to Metaverse technology in late 2021. The company reorganized his AI team in February to facilitate the integration of generative AI into its products.
The meeting discussed specific examples of how Meta plans to use generative AI. One example is the text prompt feature that allows Instagram users to modify their photos before sharing them. Another possibility is to add AI-powered chatbots similar to Snapchat to Messenger and WhatsApp, offering different personalities and features.
The timeline for implementing these features is still unknown, but Meta aims to make generative AI a core part of its flagship product. The company focuses on creating 3D visuals and is actively working on incorporating generative AI into the metaverse.
To foster innovation, Meta grants employees access to internal generative AI tools and hosts hackathons to showcase AI projects. Additionally, Instagram plans to introduce a service that allows users to modify photos using text prompts and share them in Stories.
Meta is committed to sharing AI research with the open source community, but has not addressed recent concerns about the leak of the LLaMA language model.
